In winter your hair and beard are under a double attack: outside the cold, dry air, inside the heating. The result is dryness, itching and breakage. With a little attention, though, both can stay tidy and healthy through the winter months.

Why is winter harder?

Cold air holds less moisture, and heated interiors dry the skin and hair further. Add to that the hat, which strains the hair mechanically too. The scalp dries out and can flake, while the beard can become prickly and brittle.

Hair care in winter

  • Wash less often and with lukewarm water – hot water washes out the protective oils
  • Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner regularly
  • Avoid going out into the cold with wet hair – wet hair breaks more easily
  • A hat is good, but let your scalp “breathe” from time to time

Winter hair doesn’t get better from using more product – it gets better from keeping the moisture in it.

Beard care in winter

In winter the beard is especially grateful for care – and in return it protects your facial skin from the cold. The cause of a dry, prickly beard is almost always a lack of moisture.

  • Beard oil in winter isn’t a luxury but a basic – it softens the hair and nourishes the skin underneath
  • Comb it through daily so the oil spreads evenly
  • A hydrating balm helps tidy a longer beard and reduce itching

If the skin under the beard itches or flakes, that’s almost certainly a sign of dryness. Regular oiling and a regular, professional beard trim together sort it out quickly.

The scalp can’t be left out either

In winter the scalp is the most common victim: it becomes dry, itchy, sometimes scaly. It’s important to distinguish real dandruff from simple dryness – you can read about that in detail in a separate article of ours. The key: hydrate, don’t wash with hot water, and don’t scratch.

The hat: friend and enemy

A hat is indispensable in winter, but it has a double effect. On one hand it protects you from the cold, on the other it flattens the hairstyle, and synthetic materials make you sweat and can irritate the scalp. The solution isn’t to give up the hat but to use it consciously: choose a hat of natural material (cotton, wool), don’t wear it all day indoors in the heat, and when you get home, let your hair “air out.”

Important: never put a hat on wet hair, and don’t go out into the cold with wet hair. Wet hair breaks far more easily in the cold, and the scalp cools down more too, which can worsen the hair’s condition in the long run.

Inner replenishment from the outside

Winter hair care isn’t only a matter of external care. Dry, heated air dries out the whole body, so proper fluid intake is important in winter too for the health of hair and skin. Besides, the winter months are the harder season for mood and energy as well – which is exactly why a good haircut or beard trim is worth even more in winter: a few minutes of real replenishment, after which you feel fresher and tidier.

A tidy look matters at work in winter too – in this article we’ve gathered the office hairstyles that get you taken seriously.
