Caring for Curly and Wavy Hair

Curly and wavy hair isn't a problem to be tamed – but a character that can be brought out. It just needs to be treated differently than straight hair. Here is how to make the most of it.

Curly and wavy hair isn't a problem to be tamed – it's character to be brought out. You just have to treat it differently from straight hair. Here's how to get the most out of it.

Why is curly hair different?

A curly hair strand has a flatter cross-section and is more prone to dryness, because the scalp’s natural oils reach the ends less easily. That’s why curly hair often looks more broken or frizzy – in reality it just needs more moisture and a different technique.

Cutting: the shape is what matters

With curly hair, the cut isn’t about “trimming off the excess.” Curly hair springs back, growing up and out, so when cutting you have to think ahead about how it will behave after drying. An experienced barber factors in the hair’s natural fall and the spring-back too.

Curly hair should never be judged while wet. The real shape shows after drying, in the hair’s natural state.

The fade and the skin fade work great with curly hair too: the cleaned-up sides give contrast to the texture on top, so the style stays tidy without losing the curly character.

Washing: less shampoo, more hydration

  • Don’t wash your hair every day – curly hair dries out faster
  • Use a hydrating, sulphate-free shampoo
  • Conditioner isn’t optional, it’s a basic – curly hair needs the moisture
  • After washing, don’t rub with a towel – squeeze it out, or use a cotton T-shirt

Styling: damp, not dry

Unlike straight hair, curly hair is best styled while damp. A cream or a light, moisture-retaining product helps define the waves and reduce frizz. A dry, matte clay works less well here – look instead for a hydrating product with flexible hold.

The most common mistakes with curly hair

The biggest mistake is forcibly “straightening” curly hair: too-frequent blow-drying, high heat and aggressive brushing only break the hair and increase frizz. Curly hair shouldn't be defeated but worked with. The other common mistake is too much product: heavy waxes weigh curly strands down and make the shape lifeless.

It’s also important not to comb curly hair while dry – this breaks up the natural strands and gives a bushy effect. If you want to tidy it, do it while damp, with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

What style suits curly hair?

Curly hair is a rewarding material: shorter sides and a longer, textured top is a classic, well-working combination. The fade or skin fade keeps the sides clean, while the natural curl on top is free to show. Anyone wanting longer curly hair is helped by a layered cut, so the hair doesn’t “ball up” but keeps a nice shape. The point is always the same: the cut has to follow the rhythm of your curls, not fight against it.
