After shaving, red, itchy spots, sometimes painful little bumps on the neck – ingrown hair is one of the most annoying problems, especially on the sensitive skin of the neck. Let’s look at why it develops, how you can prevent it, and what to do if it’s already appeared.
Why does hair grow in?
An ingrown hair develops when the cut hair grows not towards the skin’s surface but backwards, under the skin – or can’t even break through. The body reacts to it as a foreign object, which is why a red, inflamed bump forms around it. On the neck this is especially common, because the hair here often grows more curly and in a more disorganised direction.
The most common triggers
- Too-close shaving that cuts the hair below skin level
- Shaving against the direction of hair growth
- A dull blade that tugs rather than cuts the hair
- Missing preparation (no warm, soft skin) and aftercare
The fight against ingrown hair is 90% about technique. Good preparation and the right direction are worth more than any aftercare product.

How to prevent it?
1. Prepare the skin
Shave after a warm shower, or put a warm, damp towel on your face – this softens the hair and skin. The classic hot-towel shave is based on this too: the warm preparation is one of the best remedies against ingrown hair.
2. Use a sharp blade and the right direction
Always work with a clean, sharp blade, and shave first in the direction of hair growth. Very close, “against the grain” shaving is the main cause of ingrown hair on the neck.
3. Care for it afterwards
After shaving, a cold-water rinse and a soothing, alcohol-free aftercare. Regular, gentle exfoliation (1–2 times a week) helps the hair break through more easily.
What to do if it’s already ingrown?
- Don’t dig at it or squeeze it – this can get inflamed and scar
- A warm compress can help the hair break through on its own
- If it’s inflamed, pus-filled or doesn’t clear up, see a dermatologist
The safest prevention is a professional shave. At the barber’s, the professional knows the sensitive areas of the neck, the correct direction and the importance of preparation – so the chance of ingrown hair is far smaller than with a rushed shave at home.
Who is most affected?
Ingrown hair can happen to anyone, but some are more prone to it. It’s far more common in men with curly or strong, thick hair, because curly hair by its nature more easily turns back towards the skin. Someone with sensitive neck skin, or who shaves very close and frequently, is also more prone to it. If you’re among these, it’s especially worth paying attention to technique and preparation – or leaving regular shaving to a professional.
Good to know: ingrown hair and so-called razor bumps (the small, inflamed rash appearing on the neck) often go together. The basis of treating both is the same: gentle technique, good preparation, a sharp tool and proper aftercare.
The aftercare you shouldn’t skip
Shaving doesn’t end with the blade. Proper aftercare decides whether your skin regenerates smoothly or ends up irritated and full of ingrown hair. After shaving, rinse with cold water to tighten the pores, then apply an alcohol-free, soothing aftercare or moisturiser. Avoid strong alcohol-based aftershaves – these sting and dry out, which only makes things worse. And gentle exfoliation 1–2 times a week helps the hair always break through unobstructed.
