A polcon a drogériás sampon fillérekbe kerül, a fodrászati márka a többszörösébe. Vajon tényleg jobb a drágább, vagy csak a márkát fizeted meg? Nézzük meg őszintén, mi a valós különbség – és mikor éri meg.
On the shelf the drugstore shampoo costs pennies, the salon brand several times as much. Is the pricier one really better, or are you just paying for the brand? Let’s look honestly at what the real difference is – and when it’s worth it.
What’s the difference, really?
There is a real difference between drugstore and professional shampoos, but not always where you’d think. The main differences lie in the quality of the cleansing agents, the concentration of the active ingredients, and the balance of the formulation.
Where professional shampoo really is better
- Gentler cleansing agents – fewer aggressive sulphates that dry out the hair and scalp
- More concentrated, more targeted actives – you need less, so the higher price partly pays off
- A more balanced pH and formulation that better protects coloured or treated hair
A pricier shampoo isn’t better because it’s expensive – it’s better because you need to use less of it, and it’s gentler on your hair.
Where the drugstore one is plenty
Let’s be honest: if you have healthy, untreated, normal hair, a good drugstore shampoo does its job perfectly. You don’t necessarily need a premium product for daily cleansing. Marketing often promises more than a shampoo can realistically do – a shampoo doesn’t grow hair and doesn’t stop hair loss.

Who is professional worth it for?
Professional shampoo is worth its price when your hair has some special need:
- Coloured or bleached hair – a gentle, colour-protecting formula
- Dry, sensitive scalp or a tendency to dandruff
- Very oily hair, where balanced cleansing matters
- Curly or damaged hair that needs extra hydration
Sensitive skin needs gentle treatment beyond the scalp too – if your neck is often irritated after shaving, this article of ours explains why ingrown hair develops and how to prevent it.
The most important consideration
It’s not the price that decides but whether the shampoo suits your hair type. The worst choice is a “2-in-1” shower gel-shampoo, regardless of what it costs. The best: a gentle product suited to your hair type – whether drugstore or professional.
If you don’t know your hair type and what you need, ask us. At your next cut we’re glad to look at the condition of your hair and scalp, and tell you what’s worth investing in – and what’s unnecessary.
How much shampoo do you actually need?
One thing most people get wrong, regardless of the shampoo’s price: they use too much of it. A hazelnut-sized amount is almost always enough for the hair – more lather doesn’t mean better cleansing, but it does dry unnecessarily. On top of that, if you use less, a pricier, more concentrated professional shampoo lasts longer, which softens the price difference. This is one reason why a higher price isn’t necessarily more expensive in use.
It also matters how you wash. Cleanse the scalp with the shampoo (that’s where sebum is produced), don’t rub the ends – it’s enough for the runoff lather to rinse them. This way washing is gentler, and the ends don’t dry out unnecessarily.
Conditioner matters at least as much
In the debate about shampoo, many forget the conditioner, yet it often makes the bigger difference in how the hair feels. Conditioner seals moisture back in, smooths the hairs and reduces frizz. If it’s worth investing a little more in something, it’s often a good conditioner or hair mask – especially with dry, coloured or curly hair. A good routine doesn’t start with the priciest shampoo but with the pairing of a shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type.
