Kijöttél a fodrászattól gyönyörű, hűvös szőkével – aztán pár hét múlva a tükörben egyre inkább a sárga-narancsos árnyalatot látod. Ismerős? A szőkített haj sárgulása teljesen normális jelenség, és van ellene megoldás. Mutatjuk.
You walked out of the salon with a beautiful, cool blonde – then a few weeks later, in the mirror, you increasingly see a yellow-orange shade. Sound familiar? The yellowing of bleached hair is completely normal, and there’s a solution for it. We’ll show you.
Why does bleached hair turn yellow?
Bleaching removes the hair’s natural pigment, but the deepest, warm (yellow-orange) pigments are the most stubborn. As the cool toning applied by the hairdresser gradually washes out, these warm shades resurface. Add to that the effect of chlorine, sunlight, hard water and certain products, which pull it further towards yellow.
Yellowing doesn’t mean your hair was ruined – it means the toning has washed out. This is natural, and it can be maintained at home too.
What can you do at home?
1. Purple shampoo – the most important tool
By the logic of the colour wheel, purple neutralises yellow. Purple shampoo (silver shampoo) deposits tiny purple pigments into the hair that suppress the yellow shade. Use it 1–2 times a week – but not too often, because overdone it can leave an ashy-purple tint.
2. Protect the hair from external effects
- Before the pool, rinse your hair with clean water or use a protective product – chlorine intensifies yellowing
- Wear a hat in strong sunshine
- Avoid washing with water that’s too hot
3. Hydrate
Bleached hair is drier and more fragile. A regular hair mask and conditioner not only make it healthier but help the colour stay beautiful for longer.

When to go back to the hairdresser?
Home maintenance helps a lot, but the toning needs refreshing from time to time. A cool shade (ash, platinum, icy blonde) needs a professional toner refresh every few weeks to keep the desired effect. This is far gentler than a full re-bleaching.
If your hair has already grown out a lot at the roots or gone very yellow, don’t experiment at home with drastic solutions – fixing a bad home dye job is always harder and more expensive than a well-timed salon visit.
Why isn’t purple shampoo alone enough?
Purple shampoo is a great tool for neutralising a yellowish shade, but it’s important to understand its limits. Purple shampoo only tones the surface and doesn’t penetrate deep into the hair – so its effect is temporary and can’t replace the professional toning done in the salon. If you rely solely on purple shampoo, over time the hair can become dull, sometimes slightly ashy-grey. The best strategy is combining the two: purple shampoo at home for maintenance, and an occasional toner refresh in the salon for the real result.
It also matters what water you wash in. The mineral deposits of hard water dull and can yellow blonde hair over time – an occasional deep-cleansing (chelating) shampoo can be the solution, removing these deposits.
Maintaining blonde hair long term
Bleached hair needs continuous attention, because bleaching chemically strains the hair. The secret lies in regular hydration and reducing heat exposure. Use a hair mask weekly, avoid daily straightening and too-hot drying, and refresh the ends regularly with a trim so breakage doesn’t climb higher. A beautiful blonde isn’t a one-off result but a routine – but it’s worth it, because a well-maintained cool blonde is one of the most striking hair colours.
