How can you style your hair at home just like at the barber shop?

After the cut, everything looks perfect in the mirror – and then at home, the next morning, it somehow never quite comes together. The good news: it's not magic, it's technique. With a few steps, you too can reproduce the barber effect at home.

Why does it look gAt the barber's?

It is not just because of the cut. The barber also carries out the drying and styling consciously: directing the hair, with the right tool, in the right order. This is the part that most people skip at home – yet this is where the final result is decided.

The steps to assemble

1. Start with clean, towel-dried hair

Wet, dripping hair cannot be styled, and completely dry hair will already have „stubbornly set”. A good starting point is hair that has been gently squeezed with a towel after washing and is just damp.

2. Drying gives it the shape

This is the most important and most frequently missed step. Using a hairdryer, brush or just your hands, direct the hair in the direction you want it to go. You create most of the shape here – not with the wax.

3. Few products, smeared

A pea-sized amount is usually enough. Rub it between your palms until it warms up, then distribute it evenly. Start from the roots, rather than just coating the surface.

4. Style, do not tease

At the end, use your fingers to adjust the sections. A comb is good for an elegant style, but your fingers give that modern, textured overall look.

The most common mistake: dry hair, lots of product, without styling. The correct order: damp hair – directional drying – small amount of product – finger styling.

What to watch out for

  • The „2-in-1” shower gel-shampoo is not your friend – use one suited to your hair type
  • Too hot air dries the scalp – medium setting is enough
  • If the style isn't quite coming together anyway, you might have outgrown it – in cases like that, a fresh fade haircut helps more than anything

And if you feel it's just not working: at your next appointment, ask us to show you live, step by step. It's worth so much more than any video.

The right tools

You don't need a hairdresser's full kit at home, but a few basic tools make a big difference. A good hairdryer on its own takes styling to another level – the goal isn't to dry the hair out, but to give it direction while it's still damp. For a short, textured cut, your fingers and the dryer are enough, but for a classic side-parted style, a brush comes in handy to help set the shape.

Another often underestimated tool is a cotton T-shirt or microfibre cloth used instead of a towel. A rough towel roughs up the hair and makes it frizzy, whereas a finer material absorbs moisture more gently – the difference is particularly noticeable with wavy or curly hair.

Why does it look different the next day?

Many people complain that on the day of the cut everything is perfect, but the next day it just doesn't hold together. There is a simple reason for this: on the day of the cut, the hair is freshly washed, dried and styled. At home, you need to reproduce this process – it is not enough to just wake up and „tidy it up”. If you quickly wet your hair in the morning, dry it in the right direction and apply a little product, you will get the exact same effect. The secret is not in your hair, but in your daily routine.
